European football Friday picks: Bayern Munich v Mönchengladbach, Bordeaux v Marseille, as leagues come back
If you did know (or notice), most of the leagues around Europe have been shut down for winter breaks.
Some have had two weeks off, others three, but it might have been lost as the Premier League and other English football pyramid leagues have played so many matches over the festive period.
But most of those leagues are now getting back to action, and there are some good games this weekend around the continent.
Congratulations to Bayern Munich and PSG, who much like Manchester City have all but lifted the trophy as league winners. Bayern Munich has a nine-point lead over Borussia Dortmund, and we ALL KNOW those bottlers are not overhauling that big of a deficit: to be quite honest with you (TBQHWY), Dortmund wouldn't be able to chase down a three-point gap.
Bayern Munich can get that lead up to 12 Friday with disappointing Borussia Mönchengladbach in town. Two seasons ago, Mönchengladbach finished fourth, and they played in the UEFA Champions League last season: now, they are 14th, and just outside of the relegation zone.
In France, Marseille currently sits in third, but tied on points with second place Nice, so a victory Friday would see the club move up in the table. Bordeaux is struggling mightily, sitting in 17th just above the relegation zone. Bordeaux also leaks goals: it has allowed 43 in the 19 first half of the season contests.
I am going to roll with the two Champions League clubs today.
