Manchester United season opener Analysis: Sean Miller looks at the 4-0 win over Chelsea -- Rashford stars, Shaw needs to improve
What a result for Manchester United to open the 2019-20 season.
The Red Devils were rampant in the second half, and ran Chelsea off the pitch in a 4-0. Marcus Rashford scored a brace, while Anthony Martial had a goal in his return to the number nine jersey, and Dan James added the final goal late.
Paul Pogba had two assists as well.
It was a massive marker to put down for the opening weekend, when Manchester City, Liverpool, Tottenham, and Arsenal all won.
First half analysis
Manchester United was outplayed for large stretches of the half, with Chelsea twice hitting the wood work, including in the first four minutes of the game.
But United was handed a lifeline in the the 17th minute, as Kurt Zouma gave away a penalty that Marcus Rashford smashed into the same spot as his PSG winner.
But for the final 15 minutes, Chelsea re-took the momentum, and should have equalized.
Second half analysis
It all came down to the action between the 65th and 67th minute, as United scored twice to end the contest.
The pace of the front three shined through, as Rashford set up the first goal that Martial scored, and Pogba's pinpoint pass to Rashford just two minutes later was coolly finished to give the Red Devils a 3-0 lead.
Dan James got a run out for the final 15 minutes, and put the contest away with his United opener.
Three key points in the match:
1. The two goals in two minutes in second half.
2. Chelsea shots in the fourth minute and 40th minute crashing off the bar and not into the net.
3. Rashford penalty.
Man of the Match
Marcus Rashford- Two goals, including the killer third, gets him the nod here.
Needs to be better
Luke Shaw- He still has to be better with his awareness defensively.
