Ho hum, just another 5-1 day to end the regular season, giving me a 59.9% win rate for the year. Ho hum. Of course, the playoffs are a different animal, so I’m putting that record out separately - and everyone starts off 0-0. The WNBA’s first round are three-game series with an interesting twist: the higher seed gets the first two games at home, but if the lower seed “steals” one of those games, they get a deciding Game 3 in their own gym. It’s a unique advantage for the underdog…but will it matter?

New York Liberty at Chicago Sky, 8 pm Eastern

The Pick: New York +8 (-112), bet $5 to win $4.50

Chicago kicks off the defense of its WNBA Championship against the New York Liberty, who have won three straight and six of eight games. I think eight points is an awful lot to be giving a team playing such hot basketball. The Liberty have been fighting for their postseason lives for a month now; the Sky get started tonight. Chicago is also 7-11-1 against the spread at home. The Liberty beat the Sky on July 23 and lost on a last-second shot by Courtney Vandersloot on June 12; they think they can play with the champs.

Phoenix Mercury at Las Vegas Aces, 10 pm Eastern

The Pick: Phoenix +14.5 (-105), bet $5 to win $4.76

(shrug) Too many points. I know Phoenix is a mess; heck, I’ve been writing it all season. But they somehow backed into a playoff spot, and there’s an argument to be made that now all the distractions - Tina Charles, Brittney Griner, Skylar Diggins-Smith - are gone, and the Mercury have nothing to lose. Las Vegas is winning this series, and they’re winning tonight. But I think the Aces will keep some gas in the tank for the future rounds. No one on Phoenix can handle Aj’a Wilson or Kelsey Plum or Chelsea Gray for that matter. So I’m not predicting an upset. What I’m predicting is Las Vegas on cruise control and the Mercury showing that they’re more than the chaos of this regular season.
