Las Vegas Aces at Connecticut Sun, 1 pm Eastern
The Pick: Connecticut +1.5 (-108), bet $7.50 to win $6.94
I know I’ve spent some time bemoaning that the Connecticut Sun aren’t the team they were last year, and I know I’ve spent some time predicting the Las Vegas Aces are going to rebound from their tough stretch before the All-Star Break. But I don’t think the Aces are quite all the way back yet, certainly not enough to be favored on the road against the Sun. Connecticut is still 8-3 at home and they have already beaten Las Vegas this year - so they can do it again. The Aces’ last three games have been against the New York Liberty. The Liberty are not the Sun. I’ll take the home dog who’s fighting to still remain a title contender in front of a national television audience.
Minnesota Lynx at Washington Mystics, 3 pm Eastern
The Pick: Washington -165, bet $16.50 to win $10; Washington -3.5 (-113), bet $5.62 to win $5
Yes, I know (this column has a theme!) I’ve remarked that Minnesota seems to be on the rise. But if you read this column (now with themes!), you know how I feel about Washington when Elena Delle-Donne’s playing. She’s playing today. The Mystics are 7-4 at home and 5-1 against the spread in their last six games. They’ve also beaten Minnesota twice this year already, by an average of just under twenty points. Minnesota’s recent play hasn’t impressed me that much. Moneyline dinner, cover dessert.
Atlanta Dream at Phoenix Mercury, 6 pm Eastern
The Pick: Atlanta +6.5 (-118), bet $10 to win $8.47; Atlanta +210, bet $5 to win $10.50
You know…I just think Atlanta’s better. The Dream lost to the Mercury by two on June 10, and I think if the game had been three minutes longer, they would’ve won. I know, I know. “But it wasn’t three minutes longer…” You know what I mean. Diana Taurasi may be one of the greatest players in WNBA history, but Dream rookie Rhyne Howard might be the best player on the floor tonight. You know what? I think she is. Besides, on May 29, Atlanta did beat Phoenix, by 27 (!!). I know, I know. “Small sample size. Phoenix has beaten Atlanta blah blah blah…” You know, I’m not sure I like your attitude.
Indiana Fever at Seattle Storm, 6 pm Eastern
The Pick: Indiana +14.5 (-110), bet $7.50 to win $6.82
I know I repeat myself. You know what I’m going to say. “(shrug) Too many points.” Well, it is, dude! And if I really wanted to repeat myself, I could start repeating that so far this season, I’m 57% successful with my picks. I know, I’m jinxing myself. But Seattle is only 7-6-1 against the spread at home this season. I repeat that a lot too. So again: 57%. The Storm crushed the Fever the last two times they met, 73-57 and 95-73. They’re gonna take Indiana just a little lightly and let their foot off the gas just a little bit tonight. This line is too high based on recency bias; I just know it is.
