Chicago Sky at Indiana Fever, 7 pm Eastern
The Pick: Chicago -9 (-113), bet $5 to win $4.45
Chicago lost a close game to a team they’re better than last night, and now they’re on the second game of a road back-to-back. I’m picking them anyway, because Indiana has lost their last five games by an average of 19.4 points and they lost every one of them by double-digits. The Fever are going to have to prove themselves plucky again before I renew my faith…
New York Liberty at Phoenix Mercury, 10 pm Eastern
The Pick: New York +5.5 (-113), bet $5 to win $4.45
The sportsbooks are begging you to take Phoenix and hoping you go with the theory that New York is on the second road game of a back-to-back and just upset Las Vegas. I’m taking the points, because I’m starting to suspect that the Liberty, while not a true contender for the WNBA Finals, are frisky enough to play spoiler. That role includes a pesky follow-up performance tonight against a Mercury team distracted (legitimately so) by the wrongful detainment of their star center Brittney Griner in Russia. The Mercury certainly shouldn’t have it as a distraction, and it’s an outrage that the situation hasn’t been resolved by now. But it is a distraction, and Griner’s absence still leaves a huge hole in the middle of Phoenix’s frontcourt. New York is playing well and starting to feel confident - confident enough to make tonight a game.
Seattle Storm at Los Angeles Sparks, 10:30 pm Eastern
The Pick: Seattle -230, bet $9.20 to win $4
True, several stars for Seattle - Sue Bird, Breanna Stewart, and Jewel Loyd - are playing in Sunday’s All-Star Game so the thought could be they’re looking past tonight. But the Storm lost to the Sparks just last week, so I don’t think so. I’ll pay a hefty price to take the moneyline for Seattle to make up for that weak performance.
