WNBA Wednesday: O'Sullivan, who's sworn off Wings but loves Fowles, picks Mercury at Dream and Lynx at Aces

Phoenix Mercury at Atlanta Dream, 7 pm EDT, Minnesota Lynx at Las Vegas Aces, 9 pm EDT.

A brief statement: I will no longer be providing gambling support for the Dallas Wings.

I will not be taking questions at this time.

Seattle O’Sullivan so far: 114-93-1

Phoenix Mercury at Atlanta Dream, 7 pm Eastern

The Pick: Phoenix -300, Phoenix -6.0 (-110)

Phoenix is now a mere half-game out of getting a first-round bye, and only two games out of getting a first and second-round bye. That second-round bye might be too much to hope for, but if I were Mercury coach Sandy Brondello, I’d certainly mention it once or twice while hanging around the locker room. Atlanta, on the other hand, has nothing to play for except for a high draft pick. The last time these two played in Atlanta, Phoenix won by 15. It might not be double-digits tonight, but the Mercury are rounding into form at the perfect time.

Minnesota Lynx at Las Vegas Aces, 9 pm Eastern

The Pick: Minnesota +4.0 (-110), Minnesota +145

Las Vegas center Liz Cambage is out tonight, quarantining for COVID purposes. Minnesota center Sylvia Fowles is not out, and that’s a big advantage for the Lynx. I’m on record as saying Cambage is overrated, but her absence should let Fowles have her way inside. The Lynx are just a half-game behind the Seattle Storm for the third-seed, with three games in hand. Winners of five straight, Minnesota has already beaten Las Vegas twice this year. Both games were within four points. Four points is too much of a spread, especially when right now, the Lynx are the better team. Take the points for dinner, take the upset for dessert.
