Women’s Quarterfinals

Bianca Andreescu over Elise Mertens

Monday night’s showtime match under the lights was Canadian Bianca Andreescu against rising American Taylor Townsend. Andreescu came away with a three-set win in which, frankly, neither player deserved to win. I’ve seen both of these young ladies play for a while now, and they were both just terrible. Townsend abandoned her serve-and-volley game early, because of it’s ineffectiveness, and Andreescu mixed shots that at times missed lines by feet, with enough winners and Townsend errors to emerge victorious. The first set was a microcosm of the entire match, as Andreescu won the set 6-1, yet Townsend had ad points in every game but one. If it wasn’t one of them choking, it was the other. The second set was sloppy and boring, won by Townsend, but realistically lost by Andreescu. The third set was anti-climactic, as Andreescu won points on mishits, bloops, and net cords, and Townsend nervously dumped shot after shot into the net. Now, the woman who I’ve picked to win this title, 19-year-old Andreescu, better pick up her game or 25th seeded Belgian Elise Mertens will make her pay for it. Mertens simply destroyed American Kristie Ahn 6-1, 6-1 in the Round of 16, signaling that she’s ready for a war in the quarters. This should be a competitive and entertaining match, unless one of these women throw in a clunker.
