Men’s First Round Result
Jenson Brooksby Tops Tomas Berdych
Jenson Brooksby, the 2018 National Junior champion, shocked the tennis world by knocking off former Top Ten player Tomas Berdych in four sets in the first upset of the 2019 U.S. Open 6-1, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Brooksby, 18-years-old, won 76% of the points when he got his first serve in and converted six of fourteen break points he had on Berdych’s serve. As the only American to qualify for the Men’s main draw at this year’s Open, the Baylor University commit made the most of his opportunity and will now face the winner of the Marton Fucsovics/Nikoloz Basilashvili clash in the second round. By winning his first round match, Brooksby has guaranteed himself a $100,000 payday, should he decide to forgo an amateur career in college. If Brooksby wins his next match, he’ll receive at least $163,000 for winning two matches, and this might just be enough to convince the talented Sacramento resident to turn pro.
Other early winners include Kei Nishikori, Dusan Lajovic, and American Brad Klahn. On the women’s side, Canadian Genie Bouchard went down to Anastasija Sevastova 3 and 3, and other winners include Ekaterina Alexandrova, Karolina Pliskova (in two tiebreakers), Rebecca Peterson, Johanna Konta, Ons Jabeur, and Ash Barty, the #2 seed, who survived a scare from Zarina Diyas 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.
