Saratoga:
Race 2: SCRATCH

We began our week with a gate scratch in Race 2 of Offutt Cole. In Race 3, Itsallcomintogetha got pinched back to last at the start and rallied late for third in a race where he was an hour the best. Frustrating start to the week but an encouraging turf debut. In Race 8, Awesome Gerry was getting a perfect trip off the speed when something went amiss and he was pulled up. I hope he’s all right.
Milder temperatures are expected and there’s no threat of rain in Thursday’s forecast at the moment so we’ll be handicapping for fast and firm conditions. Let’s get started.
Thursday at Saratoga:
Race 9: Poppy Flower - 1 pt win (US Morning Line Odds: 5/1)
Today’s feature race is at 5 1/2 furlongs on turf for three year old fillies. It’s the Galway Stakes and it brings together four runners from the Coronation Cup and a fifth now entered as a main track only. In viewing some of the selections made by my counterparts stateside it appears this race won’t be short on wise-guy angles with Derrynane getting a terrible trip last time out and her stablemate, Breeze Easy cutting back in distance. Poppy Flower has run well in her last two starts at 10/1 and 7/1 and she may get overlooked again here. She defeated several of these in her two most recent starts and at least a few of those will be favored over her today for no particular reason. There’s plenty of pace to set up her closing kick and her connections are more than capable. She’ll have to work out the right trip from the rail but she’s good value at 5/1 or better.
