Garrity's Sunday 2.27 Sunland Park Picks: 3 solid stakes races highlight the card in New Mexico
With the major tracks having a combined total of zero stakes races today, we are turning our attention to Sunland Park in New Mexico, where there is a very good card highlighted by four surprisingly good stakes races. We have plays in three of them, and expect fast dirt in all of them, so let’s go.
Sunland Park, Race 6, 4:37 pm ET
$100,000 Henry Dominguez Memorial Handicap, 1 1/16 miles, Dirt, New Mexico-breds 4 & Up
A dozen state-breds go in the Dominguez. Several of them have speed, and seem unlikely to last the mile and a sixteenth, which has us expecting a winner from off the pace. We think that will be 6-Shining Source, a gelding who is worth rooting for if only because he’s still racing at the ripe old age of 11, and after having made 64 career starts. But we think he has a real shot here, as he was competitive in these kinds of state-bred races last year, he comes off a layoff that should have done his old bones quite a bit of good, and his recent morning workouts have been terrific, a sign that he is ready run big in this spot. We see the old warrior sitting midpack early, and rolling late; we will bet him to win at 6-1. The bet: Sunland Park, Race 6, $40 to win on 6-Shining Source.
Sunland Park, Race 7, 6:04 pm ET
$75,000 Island Fashion Stakes, 1 mile, Dirt, 3-Year-Old Fillies
A surprisingly good group of ten 3-year-old fillies lines up for the Island Fashion. 9-Landslid is a strong play: she has been running in New York and Pennsylvania, and while she has been competitive, with seven in-the-money finishes in nine career starts, she has also found it hard to find the winner’s circle, having done so just once. But we think this spot is absolutely perfect for her: she should love the dirt at Sunland Park, which is tighter than the sandy tracks she’s been running on, and we also think the race shape will favor her, as she should get a pocket trip, sitting just behind early pacesetters who are likely to back up in the race’s last quarter mile. Add it up and we are going to the window: we will bet Landslid to win at 3-1. The bet: Sunland Park, Race 7, $40 to win on 9-Landslid.
Sunland Park, Race 9, 6:59 pm ET
$100,000 Mine That Bird Derby, 1 1/16 miles, Dirt, 3-Year-Olds
This is another Sunland Park race for 3-year-olds that drew an unexpectedly good field: there are eight colts here, and they all look pretty good. The one who looks the best, however, to us, anyway, is 1-Fowler Blue, who ships to New Mexico from Southern California, where he was last seen in a mile allowance race at Santa Anita on Dec. 31. That was a bizarre race – Fowler Blue appeared headed for second when the horse in front threw the jockey in the shadow of the wire – but we think that the weirdness should not detract from the fact that Fowler Blue ran quite well that day. He’s had two months to mature physically, he has an inside post position that should get him a good trip, and he has an ability to finish strongly in a race that figures to running that style; add it up, and we are going to the window. We will bet Fowler Blue to win at 7-1. The bet: Sunland Park, Race 9, $40 to win on 1-Fowler Blue.
