Garrity picks Monday horse racing at Delaware Park
With the major tracks dark on this August Monday, we’re heading to Delaware Park, where there is an eight-race card that’s pretty good for a weekday. We have plays in three of them. It will be hot, and we expect fast dirt in all three. Let’s go.
Delaware Park, Race 5, 3:15 pm ET
$6,250 Claiming, 1 mile 70 yards, Dirt, Fillies & Mares 3 & Up
After scratches, a field of six goes to the gate in this claimer. We like a class dropper, 4-Lucy’s Journey. Her speed figures are a bit light, but she’s been running against much tougher allowance company, and should wake up, and run a much better race, against these lower-level claimers. Look for her to be mid-pack early, and rolling late. We will bet her to win at 6-1. The bet: Delaware Park, Race 5, $30 to win on 4-Lucy’s Journey.
Delaware Park, Race 6, 3:45 pm ET
Allowance/Optional Claiming, 6 furlongs, Dirt, Fillies & Mares 3 & Up
This second-level allowance race drew a field of six. One of them is the likeliest winner of the day: 5-She’s Achance Too. She’s running here first off the claim for high-percentage trainer Andrew Simoff, who’s winning at a ridiculous 38% at the current Delaware Park meet, and she should get a good stalking trip from her outside post. We will bet her to win at 5/2. The bet: Delaware Park, Race 6, $40 to win on 5-She’s Achance Too.
Delaware Park, Race 8, 4:45 pm ET
$5,000 Maiden Claiming, 5 ½ furlongs, Dirt, Fillies & Mares 3 & Up
Twelve bottom-level female maiden claimers line up to go five and a half furlongs in the nightcap at Delaware Park. At this level, the most important handicapping task can sometimes be finding an animal with four limbs that all work the way they’re supposed to, and we think we’ve done that, with 11-Voila Baby. She’s run three times, and any one of those three would be good enough to win at this level. She dropping in class, she has speed, and she has an outside post position that should virtually guarantee her a good trip -- add it up, and Voila Baby is going to win this. We will bet her to win at 5/2. The bet: Delaware Park, Race 8, $40 to win on 11-Voila Baby.
