Thoroughbreds: For Tuesday, McMudder is having exotic thoughts

Races at Parx

Single race exotics are the name of the game today. Parx is an excellent track to practice going deep in fields since it is often a process of subtraction. Subtract the no hopers and you are left with enough horses to fill a trifecta or superfecta that you are excited about. Yesterday proved that looking deeper had significant promise with many exotics being full of chalk but still paying well. The key to bankroll management is to determine which horses will be there but not to win. Boxing a lot of exotics gets expensive and significantly reduces returns.

Picks for March 19, 2019:

Mick was all wrong on the weather for Monday. It was clear and breezy with clouds rolling in later in the day. The track was very fair and Tuesday should be more of the same at Parx although a few degrees warmer is predicted.

Parx Race 1
$20K Maiden claiming older fillies and mares at 5 ½ f. This kind of a race is great to play tris and supers because many of the runners are easy to discard based on prior form. 7-Pogey and 2-All in Girl appear to be the obvious picks in here but both have significant holes in their form. Instead, look to the first time starters, 3-Astrokeg, 5-Kateri Tekakwitha, and 6-Citi Red, to make up the trifecta with 3-Astrokeg coming from the strongest connections. Throwing 4-Miss Rage into any superfectas makes sense.
$10 W/P/S 3-Astrokeg
$2 Exacta 3/5,6
$1 Trifecta 3/5,6/5,6
$0.10 Superfecta 3/5,6/5,6/4,7

Parx Race 4
$20K Maiden claiming for 3-year-old fillies at 5 ½ f. 3-Spicy Curry is a very suspect favorite. She is shipping east after an undistinguished start to her career in California. Although she is taking an apparent huge class drop her speed figures have not been good to date. Instead, look to a firster from the trainer still looking for her first career victory. 6-Yours Completely has been trusted to the care of Kelsey Parisi by Cash Is King, the owners of Afleet Alex and Cathryn Sophia. If they think she is up to training their horses, that’s enough for Mick. 5-Silver Witch is consistently mediocre but that should be enough to get a piece. Mick needs to box here in case 3-Spicy Curry is a markedly different filly in the 215.
$10 W/P/S 6-Yours Completely
$2 Exacta box 3,5,6
$1 Trifecta box 3,5,6

And now for some quickies….

Parx Race 5
$5K non2y for older boys at 7f. 9-Sir Sidney is the best in here but not by much. Combine him with 5-Artistic Drifter and 6-Mambo At the Gym into exactas and trifectas. Box or not depending on your bankroll.

Parx Race 6
$20K maiden claiming for 3-year-olds at 6f. After stonecolding Isabella Smile yesterday in this spot, the logical follow up would be 6-Impactful, again from Scott Lake, but 3-Ace Nine Nine looks well placed based on works and connections. Instead of straight up, box those two with 5-Artyouglad and hope for price or key them over the 5 to save some dinero.
