Thoroughbreds: McMudder’s Monday examines the fields of Parx

Races at Parx

Big fields and lots of races. Parx continues to fill many more races than Aqueduct so handicapping Mondays and Tuesdays takes on added significance when trying to increase the bankroll over the course of a week. As a result, some focus today and tomorrow will be on mixing up some bet types and amounts to take advantage of the fields and competition.

Picks for March 18, 2019:

After some nice race weather, Monday looks like possible sleet/snow/freezing rain. Hope the ponies still have their winter coats.

Parx Race 4
Starter allowance for older boys at 8f 70. This marks the return of one of Mick’s favorite “Game of Thrones” characters, 9-Hodor. He is as good on an excellent form cycle and won this race last out and gets the return services of leading jockey Mychel Sanchez. With the deservedly short price, the way to make this one payoff is to look for the exotics. 5-Quality Asset ran third in this race two back and 3-We B Jammin ran second in the same race. Play the trifecta the same way but open up the possibility of a change in order.
$10 W/P/S 9-Hodor
$2 Exacta 9/3,5
$1 Trifecta 9/3,5/3,5

Parx Race 5
$20K Claimer for 3-year-old fillies at 6 f. 5-Lights Down Low ran second at this level last out but seems to be better at a greater distance, her best races having come at 7f. 4-She’smyrisenstar ran behind the 5 last out but had the lead in the stretch so she deserves consideration, too. 3-Clever Sarah ran a clunker last out but has run better races previously and a return to form puts her in the mix.
$10 W/P/S 5-Lights Down Low
$2 Exacta box 3,4,5
$1 Trifecta box 3,4,5

And now for some quickies . . .

Parx Race 6
Starter allowance for older boys at 6f. 7-Appealing Future is today’s best bet. Now that Brother Chub is not in the race, it should come down between this one and 2-Whateveryouwant.

Parx Race 9
PA bred allowance for 3 year old fillies at 6f. 3-Isabella Smile is a potential long shot here. Her last two races were very good but both were on a sealed, muddy track. If she takes to a dry surface, and her works say she will, look here.
