Bet Golf: Mike Kern picks the Puerto Rico Open, where the names are less known - Brown, Vegas, Grillo, Hossler - but the payouts can be big

Whenever there’s a World Golf Championship event going on, the players who don't qualify head to a satellite tourney somewhere. This week that would be the Puerto Rico Open, where you might not even recognize most of the names. But it’s still another chance to come up with a winner, so we will try.

Viktor Hovland is the fave, at 11-1. Alex Noren, the other most “notable” guy in the field, is 16-1. I’m only going to list a few more, trying to stick with those you might actually know.

Scott Brown is 20-1. He has five top 10s here, including a win in 2013. And he was second last week at the Genesis, which has a really elite field.

Patrick Rodgers is also 20-1. Cameron Davis is 25-1, along with Chesson Hadley (your 2014 champion), Tom Lewis and Maverick McNealy. Any of them do much for you?

Jhonattan Vegas is 28-1, Emiliano Grillo 33-1. I know them. Heck, I’ve picked them. Beau Hossler is 40-1.

That’s as far as I’m going to go. I haven’t studied this thing near enough to have a legit clue, but my advice is to pick out a few names and put a few bucks on them to have something to root for. Nothing wrong with that.

I would try Scott Brown at 20-1. Maybe either Jhonattan Vegas (28) or Emiliano Grillo (33), or both. Beau Hossler (40) is another with a little bit of a track record. And if you really want to go nuts there’s always Sam Saunders, Arnold Palmer’s grandson, at 125-1. You never know how that karma stuff will possibly play out. And he’s 25-1 if he finishes in the top five. So there is that too.
