Mims: Comcast doubling down on Esports
Comcast Spectator knows a good play when they see it. The media giant sees an awesome opportunity with esports. The Philadelphia Fusion, an esports team owned by Comcast Spectator that competes in the Overwatch League, will be playing in a 50,000,000 arena that is scheduled for completion by 2021.
The arena will have 3500 seats and be equipped to host small concerts, comedy shows and corporate events. I can envision Tiffany Haddish doing standup or Ella Mai performing in a venue of this size. The Fusion Arena will be next to Wells Fargo Center, Lincoln Financial Field, Citizens Bank Park and the mixed-use Xfinity Live development.
The Fusion is playing their games this year in California as they await the completion of this venue. This facility will complement the stadium complex perfectly. It will be the largest dedicated esports venue in the country. An investment of this magnitude means that Comcast is not only a leader in media and technology. Esports can be added to their resume.
Cordish Companies is part of this collaboration and has familiarity in the region. This includes developments of the Walk in Atlantic City, Xfinity Live and the forthcoming Live Casino project that is near the stadium complex.
