One of our favorite NFL Props is taking a stab at which player which score the First Touchdown in a game. It is a real shot-in-the-dark stab at some early-game money, and while a lot of whom you choose to bet on will be dependent on the odds, we thought we’d try to learn something by breaking down the First TDs scored in last season’s regular season games.
Feel free to use or not use any of this information for your benefit. As they say, a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing . . .
♦ The Chiefs and Seahawks each scored the First TD in 12 of their 16 regular season games. Seattle had the honors in the Week 16 contest between the two of them.
♦ The Patriots scored the First TD in each of their eight home games, the only team to do so either home or away. They had only three First TDs in road games.
♦ The Broncos and Lions each had NFL-high six First TDs in road games. Somehow, Denver managed to only do it once at home in the Mile High City.
♦ The Cardinals (2 road, 1 home) and Falcons (1 road, 2 home) had just three games each with the First TD. Every other NFL team did so at least five times. Each team’s Road/Home First TD Total:
♦ There were two games with no TDs at all. That leaves 254 games with a First TD. Seventeen of those were returns or blocks of some sort, which leaves 237 First TDs from scrimmage.
♦ The players with the most First TDs in 2018 (total season TDs in parentheses):
5 (21): Todd Gurley, RB (Rams)
4 (8): Josh Allen, QB (Bills)
4 (15): Saquon Barkley, RB (Giants)
4 (6): Cameron Brate, TE (Buccaneers)
4 (5): Jaron Brown, WR (Seahawks)
4 (13): James Conner, RB (Steelers)
4 (9): Kenyan Drake, RB (Dolphins)
4 (6): Alshon Jeffery, WR (Eagles)
4 (6): Dak Prescott, QB (Cowboys)
♦ Seattle’s Brown had four First TDs and only one that wasn’t a first.
♦ Of the 22 players who scored 10 or more TDs in 2018, only one failed to register a First TD. That was Falcons rookie WR Calvin Ridley (10).
♦ Prescott and Allen had eight of the 15 First TDs scored by Quarterbacks. Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes (2) was the only other QB with more than one.
♦ A half-dozen or so players scored the First TDs in back-to-back games, but only the Titans’ Derrick Henry did so in three consecutive contests (Weeks 14-15-16).
♦ Special shout-out to Sony Michel. The Patriots’ running back had two First TDs in the regular season . . . but all three of New England’s in the postseason.
♦ A total of 169 different players scored a First TD in 2018. In addition to those with five (1) and four (8) above, there were 22 players who had three, 53 players who had two and 116 who managed only one.
♦ In 15 of the 17 Weeks, the majority of First TDs were scored by players who had not scored a First TD to that point of the season. Only Week 13 (7-8-1) and Week 16 (7-9) had more repeaters that first-timers.
♦ There were more First TDs Passing (144) than First TDs Rushing (93) . . . Running Backs accounted for more of them (95, by 52 different RBs) than Wide Receivers (93, by 67 different WRs). Tight Ends registered 34 (25) First TDs.
♦ Home Teams scored the First TD 143 times; Road Teams 111.
♦ Teams that scored the First TD Won 171 games and Lost 81. (There were two ties.)
♦ Home Teams that scored the First TD were 106-36-1 (.746). Road Teams that did so were 65-45-1 (.591).
