A few of the WNBA’s top teams match up tonight as the New York Liberty and Breanna Stewart look to make up lost ground against the young and hungry Washington Mystics.
Out west, it’s the red-hot Phoenix Mercury and triple-double machine Alyssa Thomas taking on a struggling Chicago team trying to find any positive rhythm. Get our 3 WNBA best bets for Thursday, August 28, below. Good luck!
A team that seems to play tougher against the top-tier teams, Washington might be having the best season of any team under .50,0 with rookies Kiki Iriafen and Sonia Citron living up to their high draft selections.
While they have dropped four straight, they have lost each game by 11 or fewer points and very rarely get blown out due to their solid defense, which in total ranks 6th in the WNBA.
Scoring 81 and 82 points over their last two games against Vegas and Seattle, expect a tough contest against a New York team that is still slowly bringing Stewie back into the rotation. The Liberty haven’t defeated a team by more than 12 points since July 25th.
Best Bet: Mystics +13
The Storm dropped five straight earlier this month by 10 points or less, before getting back on track against three of the bottom teams in the W.
After losing by 20 to Indiana on Tuesday, I’m expecting a bounce-back game against a Minnesota team that they are 1-2 against this season, with their two losses coming by five and four points apiece.
Seattle has the offensive firepower to compete with Minnesota, and while they are still heavy underdogs in this one, they play well against the top teams. Collier came back from injury a few nights ago against Indiana, dropping 32 points on 70% FG. Should she rest tonight, this line will move even closer to an even spread.
Best Bet: Storm +9
Phoenix is now 4-1 over their L5 with Alyssa Thomas turning in three triple-doubles over that span, inching closer to a real shot at entering the MVP conversation at 33 years of age.
The Sky are heading in the other direction, dropping 7 of their last 8 while failing to defend the 3-ball and struggling to form offensive creation on almost every level.
While Angel Reese’s return will help keep them competitive, the 9-win team simply is much worse in each position compared to this red-hot Mercury team fighting for home court advantage in the postseason.
Best Bet: Mercury -12.5
