NFL QB Breakdown: Eckel examines the AFC West — This Patrick Mahomes guy looks like a keeper

Mark Eckel

There has never been an NFL offseason quite like this one when it comes to quarterbacks. One of the greatest of all time switched teams, another sure Hall of Famer stayed put, while two other Super Bowl MVPs are on the trade block along with another who has gotten to a Super Bowl. A No. 1 overall pick will also be moved and a No. 2 overall pick already has moved. Here is a division by division look at the situation for the most important position in the game.

AFC West

Denver Broncos: Drew Lock came on late in his rookie year and played well enough to give the Broncos hope that he’s the future for them. The team will look to trade, if it can, or release former Ravens Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco and bring in a cheaper backup. Editors note: A person with knowledge of the deal tells The Associated Press that the Broncos have agreed to a two-year contract with veteran free agent quarterback Jeff Driskel to be Lock's backup.

Kansas City Chiefs: This Patrick Mahomes guy probably has a good chance of keeping his starting job in KC. It appears as if veteran Matt Moore will come back in the No. 2 role as well.

Las Vegas Raiders: The Raiders, who by the way have had a good run in free agency, already signed Marcus Mariota to compete (and beat out) Derek Carr. But don’t be shocked if the Raiders go after either Cam Newton or Jameis Winston as well and dump Carr. Could you imagine if Winston and Mariota, the first two picks of the 2015 Draft, are together?

Los Angeles Chargers: What the Chargers are saying is they are going to go with Tyrod Taylor in 2020 and draft their quarterback of the future. They have the No. 6 pick in the draft and could also move into the top five. But there are also rumors they are interested in Cam Newton.
