O'Sullivan's Wednesday ACC Picks: Virginia Tech v NC State, Wake Forest v Georgia Tech, Virginia v Pittsburgh

Seattle O'Sullivan

Virginia Tech Hokies at North Carolina State Wolfpack, 7 pm Eastern

The Pick: North Carolina State +100, bet $10 to win $10

These two teams are currently near the bottom of the ACC, separated by one game, so I’m not too sure why Virginia Tech is favored here. The Wolfpack beat the Hokies in Blacksburg on Jan. 4, 68-63. So I’ll take a “home dog” straight up tonight. N.C. State averages 6.2 more points per game. The Hokies allow only 59.3. Is it their defense, or their tempo? I think it’s their tempo, which is the 25th slowest in the nation. The Wolfpack aren’t that slow, and won’t allow it to get that slow in their own building.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons at Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, 7 pm Eastern

The Pick: Wake Forest -137, bet $20.55 to win $15

Wake Forest is 14-4 and 12-0 as a favorite this year. They’ve also lost five straight to Georgia Tech, so tonight is a fine opportunity for head coach Steve Forbes and the Demon Deacons to prove they’re turning a corner by vanquishing one of their demons. Georgia Tech is 1-5 in conference play, have lost four of their last five at home, and their Pomeroy adjusted offense is 187th (against Wake’s 56th ranked adjusted defense). I think the Demon Deacons make a statement tonight.

Virginia Cavaliers at Pittsburgh Panthers, 9 pm Eastern

The Pick: Pittsburgh +3.5 (-106), bet $10.60 to win $10; Pittsburgh +146, bet $5 to win $7.30

(shrug) A “home dog” that always plays hard against a team dining off reputation who plays slow, promising a low-scoring game. Both teams average exactly the same scoring, 62.5. This will not be a track meet. The Panthers have won two of their last three, only lost to Virginia by one in the Cavaliers’ gym, and haven’t lost a game by more than four at home since their opener in November.

Moneyline Parlay: N.C. State (+100) w/Wake Forest (-137) w/Pittsburgh (+146), true price +751, bet $2.50 to win $18.78
