First, it was called “middle of the road.” Then it was “soft rock.” And then, in 2005, a bunch of guys in Los Angeles with too much time on their hands and an Internet connection rechristened the melodic, female-focused genre of pop music “yacht rock,” and the rest, as they say, is history.
Today, yacht rock—which encompasses music performed by the likes of Hall & Oates, Michael McDonald and Christopher Cross—is a universally accepted pop sub-genre. Which is why it’s no surprise that a multi-act “package tour” dubbed Rock the Yacht is making its way around the country this summer.
The show is headlined by Ambrosia (“How Much I Feel,” “Biggest Part of Me”) and featuring John Ford Coley (as in “England Dan &”), Walter Egan (“Magnet and Steel”), Peter Beckett (lead singer of Player) and Eliot Lurie of Looking Glass (“Brandy”).
