Washington Mystics at Connecticut Sun, 1 pm Eastern
The Pick: Washington +6 (-113), bet $5.62 to win $5
For a month now I’ve been picking Washington when Elena Delle Donne is playing, and picking against Washington when Elena Delle Donne is not playing. Well, she’s listed as questionable for today’s game. But I’m going ahead and taking the points anyway. If the Mystics star plays, great. If not, well, I still think Washington has brought their game up a notch this season, while there’s something ju-usst a little bit off about Connecticut. Maybe it’s the season-ending injury to the Suns’ star Jasmine Thomas. Maybe it’s a bit of a hangover from last season’s playoffs. I’m not sure, but while I think Connecticut is still a contender, I don’t like them as much as last year. I’m betting Delle Donne plays, but I’m also betting that the Sun let the Mystics hang around regardless.
Seattle Storm at Atlanta Dream, 3 pm Eastern
The Pick: Atlanta +5.5 (-113), bet $5.62 to win $5
(shrug) Home dog, featuring a home team that’s on the rise. Atlanta has the league’s brightest young star in Rhyne Howard, and an offense that plays at a much faster pace than Seattle. Despite that pace, the Dream’s defense is pretty solid - third in the WNBA. Now, the Storm’s is best. But I think that plays into a close matchup today in Atlanta. With a close matchup, and a young team on the rise, I’m gonna say today’s a nice step forward for Howard and her squad.
New York Liberty at Los Angeles Sparks, 6 pm Eastern
The Pick: New York +3.5 (-110), bet $5.51 to win $5
I mean, I guess I understand why Los Angeles is favored here. Home team (shrug), same record as New York, right? But the Liberty started off 1-7. The Sparks are only 3-4 at home. New York is 5-3 against the spread on the road. I continue to think Los Angeles’s defense is terrible, and despite having (because they have?) Liz Cambage, the Sparks struggle to rebound the basketball. Though they’re up and down, I think New York always plays hard. I don’t feel the same way about the Sparks.
Las Vegas Aces at Minnesota Lynx, 7 pm Eastern
The Pick: Las Vegas -5 (-114), bet $5.68 to win $5
This is the favorite I’ll take today (though I’m guessing you’ve noticed how small all of my plays are). Las Vegas beat Minnesota by six on Friday, but I don’t think that was enough to squash the memory of only beating the Lynx by one point on Father’s Day. I don’t think Head Coach Becky Hammon will be satisfied until the Aces demonstrate their dominance over Minnesota. People (including me) don’t think Las Vegas is the best team in the W right now. I’m betting Hammon wants to remind us.
