Connecticut Sun at Chicago Sky, 12 pm Eastern
The Pick: Chicago (-164), bet $16.40 to win $10; Chicago -3.5 (-106), bet $5 to win $4.72
Chicago’s been on a pretty good roll lately, winning eight of their last ten games to get to 13-5, including a 83-79 victory over Connecticut on June 10, less than three weeks ago. The Sky have also beaten Las Vegas (in Vegas) during that stretch, and both of those two recent losses were by a mere bucket. The Sun are “only” 13-6, but are capable of dropping games to bad teams - they lost to New York just last week. The Sky are not a bad team and what’s more, I think they have the Sun’s number, going back to last season’s playoffs when they simply out-hustled them. I think star Candace Parker gets up for Connecticut and she will do so again tonight at home. Take the moneyline to cover, lay the points for dessert.
Indiana Fever at Phoenix Mercury, 10 pm Eastern
The Pick: Phoenix -7 (-108), bet $8.60 to win $8
In their last game, Indiana hung around with Phoenix until halftime, then faded away somewhat. The Mercury wound up winning by 12, 83-71. I think the Fever are getting better but still learning lessons while Phoenix, for all its problems, is a veteran team. Incidentally, I think the parting between the Mercury and fiery scorer Tina Charles will actually help the team. So tonight, even though the Fever have a quick second bite at the apple, I think they just won’t have the defense to stop superstar Diana Taurasi, who hit seven three-pointers in the win on Monday. I think this is the now-or-never moment for Phoenix, and Taurasi and company won’t let it slip away - just yet anyway.
Las Vegas Aces at Seattle Storm, 10 pm Eastern
The Pick: Las Vegas +2.5 (-117), bet $8.72 to win $7.50
Las Vegas has stumbled a bit in the last week or so, dropping two games out of three, so the tendency is to think they’ll be on their heels in Seattle tonight. But bear in mind, one of those games was an overtime loss to a good Washington team, and the other was by two points to a Chicago team defending its championship. I think the losses say more about the Mystics and the Sky than they do the Aces. The Storm, meanwhile, have been a bit better than their early season miscues - now 11-7 after starting off 5-5. But they just lost to a terrible Los Angeles Sparks team at home, and are under .500 against the spread in their own gym. Las Vegas has the best offensive rating in the WNBA; the Storm is ninth. The Aces have the fastest pace in the league; the Storm are tenth. I just think the Aces are better, and they’ll be up for rebounding from the past week. Take the points, especially if you can find the Aces with that extra half-point.
