Indiana Fever at Phoenix Mercury, 10 pm Eastern
The Pick: Indiana +7.5 (-113), bet $7.50 to win $6.68
I think there’s a little recency bias going on, here. The last game for each of these teams was against the Dallas Wings. Indiana lost to the Wings on Thursday by 26; Phoenix beat Dallas on Saturday by 11. But any reader of this column knows that Dallas is, well, not the most steady of performers. In fact, I picked Phoenix against them mainly because I felt the Wings would underperform. What I’m saying is, I’m not putting as much stock in that victory as one normally would. The Mercury did beat the Fever by 13 on June 15, which to me means a) Indiana will be looking to play better in this matchup and b) Phoenix may play a little loose and entitled. The Mercury are quite capable of losing to a bad team; two of their recent losses were to Minnesota by double-digits. I like the Fever to scrap and fight in a close game tonight.
Las Vegas Aces at Los Angeles Sparks, 10:30 pm Eastern
The Pick: Las Vegas -6.5 (-108), bet $7.50 to win $6.94
I think two things: Las Vegas is the best team in the WNBA right now, and the Aces are thrilled to be rid of Liz Cambage. Both thoughts lead me to think that Las Vegas will want to take it to the Sparks tonight. The two teams have played twice already, and the Aces won both games by an average of 22.5 points. Las Vegas’ offense is the best in the league; Los Angeles’ defense is tenth. The vocal Cambage might come across as someone who would enact revenge against her old team but the Aces actually walk the walk. I don’t think they’re interested in letting Los Angeles sniff around anywhere close. Besides, Las Vegas is coming off two losses in a row. They need to get right. The Sparks have the misfortune of being in the way this evening; Aces, easy.
