Phoenix Mercury at Dallas Wings, 8 pm Eastern
The Pick: Phoenix +7.5 (-113), bet $8.48 to win $7.50
I was convinced that Dallas’ last game against Atlanta would be the letdown, and it wasn’t. So I’m banking that letdown will instead be tonight. Phoenix played the Wings to a tight five-point game on June 17, and frankly speaking had a chance to win it at the end. So getting 7.5 points tonight is enough for me to take the Mercury. Phoenix has lost to Dallas twice already this year, by an average of 7.5, so the line is right there. But I think the Wings playing a team they should beat for the third time will be a chance for them to let their collective feet off the gas.
Los Angeles Sparks at Seattle Storm, 9 pm Eastern
The Pick: Los Angeles +10 (-113), bet $8.43 to win $7.50
Seattle is coming off a big win over Washington on Thursday, and I continue to not love them covering spreads at home. I’ll concede that’s not the most elegant sentence I’ve ever written in this column, but I do have facts on my side. The Storm is 5-5 against the spread at home this season, and only beat Los Angeles by three on May 20. The Sparks will be playing hard for their new coach Fred Williams, and they’re coming off a beatdown at the hands of the Chicago Sky. The Sparks will be looking to make up for that tonight, so I’ll take double digits and bank on the Storm’s veterans coasting only to a relaxed victory.
Washington Mystics at Las Vegas Aces, 10 pm Eastern
The Pick: Washington +8.5 (-113), bet $8.43 to win $7.50
Speaking of teams looking to make up for beatdowns, allow me to introduce you to the Washington Mystics. Washington is coming off a double-digit loss to Seattle on Thursday, and now goes into Las Vegas eager to make up for that. The Aces are coming off their own loss, to Chicago on Tuesday. So both teams will be playing their hardest. It’s the Mystics defense that has me thinking this game will be close. Washington’s defensive rating is third in the WNBA, and they rebound the basketball better than the Aces. Finally, they play at the slowest pace in the league. I think they’ll deflate the ball enough to keep the score lower than Las Vegas prefers, which has me leaning towards a “closer” final score.
