New York Liberty at Washington Mystics, 7 pm Eastern
The Pick: Washington -12.5 (-110), bet $5.50 to win $50
On Wednesday, New York got their first win since the season opener, snapping a seven-game losing streak. But it was against a “getting better but still not good, oh, and also young, oh, and also playing their second game of a back-to-back,” Indiana Fever team. So perhaps we shouldn’t give the Liberty too much credit. They’re still quite banged up, with scorer Betnijah Laney and guard Jocelyn Willoughby for the foreseeable future. Washington, on the other hand, is 7-3 (8-2 against the spread), is third in the WNBA in net rating, and boasts the third-best defense in the league against New York’s worst offense. I think New York comes back to earth in the nation’s capital tonight.
Chicago Sky at Atlanta Dream, 7:30 pm Eastern
The Pick: Chicago -137, bet $13.70 to win $10; Chicago -2.5 (-109), bet $5.43 to win $5
Atlanta’s an improved squad over last season, to be sure. But Chicago are the defending champs, and what’s more, I think Sky star Candace Parker has a sense of the moment. She knows tonight’s game against the Dream will be an opportunity to show star rookie Rhyne Howard she’s still on top. Parker has been rather vocal about Chicago’s need to play more consistently. Well, here’s a chance for the Sky to show they’re listening to her. Atlanta’s on the rise but not quite at the top tier yet.
Connecticut Sun at Phoenix Mercury, 10 pm Eastern
The Pick: Phoenix +6 (-109), bet $10.90 to win $10
Connecticut plays tonight after having two straight games against the Las Vegas Aces, including one last night. The Sun split those two, winning last night 89-81, proving they’re still the team to beat in the WNBA’s Eastern Conference. But the combination of fatigue and playing a lesser opponent than the Aces will have Connecticut’s foot off the gas just a bit. Meanwhile, the Mercury are fighting for their lives. They’re 2-7 overall, after making the WNBA Finals last year, so they need this win. The Sun may win, but Phoenix will put it all out there and at the very least make it a battle.
Dallas Wings at Seattle Storm, 10 pm Eastern
The Pick: Dallas +6 (-117), bet $9.15 to win $7.50
(vehement shake of the head) This is more about Seattle than it is about Dallas. The Storm continue to allow teams to hang around in games they play at home. True, their last game was a beatdown of the New York Liberty, 92-61. But that was two days after they had already played the Liberty, and the “right now worst in the league” Liberty took them to overtime. The home games before that, Seattle won by three against a mediocre Sparks team and by three against an inconsistent Sky team. The Storm are struggling to remain in the WNBA’s top tier. For its part, Dallas has lost two in a row and so it’s just about time for them to zag again when everyone’s expecting a zig. I think it’s a tight game.
