O'Sullivan's Wednesday WNBA Pick: Lynx vs Dream – Atlanta is hot, Minnesota is not; will that reverse?
Here we go again. Dallas trailed Los Angeles by double-digits for most of the game, then comes back to take the lead in the fourth quarter, only to promptly lose that lead. Just when I assume the game is lost, however, the Wings hit some shots, get a late turnover, and Arike Ogunbowale has two free throws with 0.8 seconds left and Dallas down by two. Of course, she misses the first - which would’ve covered the +1.5. But wait, you say, she can hit the second to cover, right? Well, Ogunbowale missed that one too. Apparently after missing both she went over and kicked the scorer’s table in frustration. I didn’t see that, however - I was lamenting the non-cover with my face in my hands. Of course, part of that lament was comfortable. My despair over my Wings was just like old times…

I’m going to take the points here principally because I continue to think Minnesota is better than their start has indicated. Last season, the Lynx made a serious run to being a playoff contender during the season, so it’s not unprecedented that they need a little time to find themselves. Atlanta has been one of the pleasant surprises in the WNBA, but not everything is rosy. The Dream have a turnover percentage of 24.2; they’re giving the ball away essentially one out of every four possessions. Part of that is because of youth, and part of that is pace; at 97.43, Atlanta’s the third fastest team in the league. I think the Lynx are better than their 2-7 start, and I think Atlanta has some lessons to learn as they become one of the WNBA’s better teams. Tonight is one of those lessons.
