O'Sullivan's Sunday WNBA Picks: Mercury vs Dream, Liberty vs Storm, Sparks vs Lynx – Cambage vs Fowles

Phoenix Mercury at Atlanta Dream, 12 pm Eastern
The Pick: Atlanta +1.5 (-112), bet $8.40 to win $7.50; Atlanta +100, bet $2.50 to win $2.50
(shrug) Right now, Atlanta’s the better team. It’s not just based on records, although the Dream are 4-3 while Phoenix is 2-5. It’s injuries; the Mercury are without Kia Nurse (knee), Shea Peddy (back), and Sophie Cunningham (COVID quarantine). It’s, I mean, it’s weird to say, but it’s political intrigue (Brittney Griner being unlawfully detained by Russia, and why isn’t this a bigger deal?!). And I think it’s a Finals hangover from last season. All of these reasons have left the Mercury somewhat in disarray. Their defense is last in the WNBA (109.8 rating), while the Dream’s defense has shown a marked improvement from last year (3rd in the league at 94.7). Atlanta’s new star Rhyne Howard has lifted her squad to new heights, and she’s only getting better. Today she gets to show her stuff on national TV. I’ll take the home dog that, again, right now is the better team.
New York Liberty at Seattle Storm, 6 pm Eastern
The Pick: Seattle -7.5 (-115), bet $8.06 to win $7.00
I’ve talked a lot about how Seattle allows teams to hang around at home, but getting the spread down to 7.5 points here is enough for me to trust them. Both teams are dealing with a bunch of injury/COVID issues (even Sue Bird is out for quarantine), but to me the most important injury is New York’s Betnijah Laney. The Liberty miss her scoring terribly. This is the second of back-to-back games between these two teams, and Friday the Storm had to survive overtime to best the Liberty. I think they’ll want to put the clamps on a little harder today. Right now Seattle’s in the middle of the pack; if they’re to have any chance in the postseason, they can’t lose games like this one. They handle it.
Los Angeles Sparks at Minnesota Lynx, 7 pm Eastern
The Pick: Minnesota -124, bet $9.26 to win $7.50
Once again, a battle between two of the WNBA’s top bigwomen, and once again, I’ll take the center who’s got heart, doesn’t complain constantly, and is at home. There are so few very, very tall centers in the league, it’s always a) a big advantage when one goes against a team that doesn’t have one and b) a lot of fun when two do match up with each other. I’m a big fan of Minnesota’s Sylvia Fowles - she plays hard, dominates the boards, and is a terrific rim protector. I’m, er, less of a fan of Liz Cambage, who I feel is deceptively unaggressive and allows the refs and performing for the crowd to distract her from her game. So I’m going with Fowles tonight. This may be her last year, her Lynx are struggling to stay afloat in the standings, and she’s facing an opposing center who I imagine, hm, stokes her competitive fire, let’s say. Minnesota is better than their 2-5 record indicates; the Sparks are not as good as their 3-6 record indicates. I’ll take the Lynx in a straight win
