Las Vegas Aces at Chicago Sky, 3 pm Eastern
The Pick: Las Vegas -148, bet $11.10 to win $7.50
Las Vegas has kicked off the season 7-1, with an average margin of victory of 13.2. While it’s definitely premature to be headlining articles with “Jackie Young For M.V.P.” as ESPN.com has done, as, y’know, the season is two weeks old, it is not premature to say the Aces have come out of the gate roaring. With new coach Becky Hammon, they seem to be on a mission. Tops in the WNBA in offensive rating (112.5) and net rating (15.4), Las Vegas is cruising. I think they’ll treat today’s nationally-televised game against Chicago, the defending champions, as a statement game. Chicago has started 4-2 but it’s been against weak opponents for the most part. While I’m not ready to pronounce Young M.V.P. yet, she is playing fantastic, averaging 19.2 points per game on 56.4% shooting (50% from three). She makes a statement today too. I’ll pay a little extra not to worry about the spread.
Washington Mystics at Connecticut Sun, 7 pm Eastern
The Pick: Washington +9.5 (-110), bet $8.25 to win $7.50
(shrug) Just too many points. I know Elena Delle Donne is slated for load management rest, but Washington is clearly the most improved team from last season. Connecticut, while very good and better than the Mystics, will have their hands full. The Sun suffered a big blow on Tuesday when guard Jasmine Thomas was lost for the season with a knee injury. That will put extra pressure on her backup, Natisha Hiedeman, who doesn’t have nearly the poise or intensity that Thomas provided. What’s more, Washington is currently playing the best defense in the WNBA, with a 92.3 rating; the Sun are second at 92.9. The Mystics also play the slowest pace in the league so far. This will be a tight, slowed-down game, and that favors the team getting almost ten points.
