Los Angeles Sparks at Indiana Fever, 7 pm Eastern
The Pick: Indiana +6 (-113), bet $11.30 to win $10; Indiana +198, bet $5 to win $9.90
Indiana fired its coach, legend Marianne Stanley, this week, in an effort to go in a new direction with the young core of talent they recently drafted. Stanley is a Hall of Fame coach, but I agree with the move. The Fever have a mix of veteran scorers in Kelsey Mitchell and Tiffany Mitchell (no relation), and a great group of rookies. I like the foundation. The Fever’s front office made reference to a long-term process but I think the team is closer to winning than anyone realizes. The change was coming – and is coming faster than we expect. Tonight, Indiana plays its first game under interim coach Carlos Knox against the Los Angeles Sparks, and I think Knox will pay dividends immediately. He promises the Fever will defend, which is good because right now they’re 10th in the WNBA in defensive rating. They’ll guard tonight, and cover the spread against a Sparks team that isn’t as good as they think they are and has trouble closing out games, even in victories. L.A. has lost five of six and in that win against Phoenix, almost blew a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter. Indiana starts a new era tonight with a gritty performance under Knox.
New York Liberty at Seattle Storm, 10 pm Eastern
The Pick: New York +12.5 (-112), bet $5.60 to win $5
(shrug) Too many points. Seattle’s only won two games by double-digits this year, and like last year, tend to play tough, close games at home. The Storm, deceptively, are struggling, with an offensive rating that’s 9th in the league. Currently, New York is, well, not good. But I think Seattle is still trying to figure things out, and I don’t trust them laying this much against anyone. Even though the Liberty are 0-5 against the spread in their last five, I think they hang in against Seattle, who’re still banged up, older, and content to cruise during the regular season.
