Phoenix Mercury at Las Vegas Aces, 3 pm Eastern
The Pick: Phoenix +8.5 (-120), bet $6 to win $5
These two teams have played twice so far this season, with Las Vegas winning by double-digits each time. That’s why I’m taking the points this time. Although Phoenix is struggling to start the season, they are used to facing the Aces…and the Aces are used to facing the Mercury, so I expect them to take their foot off the gas pedal a bit today. The game is on national television, which means Phoenix and its stars – Diana Taurasi, Skyler Diggins-Smith, and Tina Charles – will be extra-incentivized to make this a game. Besides, the defending finalists may be struggling now, but they have talent, experience, and pride. And today they’re getting 8.5 points – I think they’ll use ‘em.
Minnesota Lynx at Dallas Wings, 8 pm Eastern
The Pick: Minnesota +2.5 (-104), bet $5.20 to win $5
Ah, what to do, what to do? My two WNBA obsessions meet; what to do? Well, what to do is, jujitsu those obsessions against each other. I think Dallas is a talented team, but I also understand they’re up-and-down and just when I think they’ve turned a corner, they devastate me. Two steps forward, one step back – right onto my heart. On Thursday they beat the Phoenix Mercury at home, coming around a corner in the desert, right? So I need them to prove to me they can sustain success. I don’t think it happens tonight, against a Minnesota team that’s struggled out of the gate but still has Sylvia Fowles, who absolutely no one on the Wings can handle down low. My other obsession is wondering why the Lynx aren’t better than their record. But they started slow last year before coming on strong, and I can see it happening again this season. Fowles dominates the Dallas frontcourt enough to get the cover. I’ll follow this game with my emotions barely in check.
