O'Sullivan's Friday WNBA Picks: Fever vs Sun, Mystics vs Dream, Sparks vs Storm – Delle Donne, Howard, Nneka
Last week my editor suggested that in future seasons, I wait a few weeks to get a sense of the league before starting to make my WNBA picks. I suppose he made this suggestion because I started off 3-9. I chose not to take it as a suggestion, but as an affront, and as motivation, and I feel my last week has vindicated me.

Seattle O’Sullivan 2022 WNBA Season so far: 18-14, +$14.46

Indiana Fever at Connecticut Sun, 7 pm Eastern
The Pick: Indiana +14.5 (-106), bet $10.60 to win $10
If you’re gonna keep giving me double-digit spreads for the Indiana Fever to cover, I’m gonna keep riding them. (shrug) They play hard and they play four quarters. I trust them not to necessarily win games but to always compete. So far the Fever are only 2-4, but they’ve only lost two games by more than ten points. Connecticut is clearly the better team, and I expect them to win. But I think the Fever’s star scorer, Kelsey Mitchell, and rookie star Nalyssa Smith, keep their team within a respectable distance.
Washington Mystics at Atlanta Dream, 7:30 pm Eastern
The Pick: Washington -1 (-109), bet $10.90 to win $10
Apparently, getting Elena Delle Donne back has been just the thing the Mystics needed to become contenders. Washington has started off 4-1, and while I still think there haven’t been enough games to really delve into statistics, Delle Donne is flirting with shooting 50% from the field, 40% from three, and 90% from the line. Atlanta has started 4-1 too, and appears better than last year, but they don’t have anyone who can handle Delle Donne. Dream star rookie Rhyne Howard is just that, a star but also a rookie. I think Delle Donne gets the better of her tonight - but it’s a long season…
Los Angeles Sparks at Seattle Storm, 10 pm Eastern
The Pick: Los Angeles +8 (-113), bet $11.30 to win $10
I like Seattle to win this game, but it’s too many points to lay for a team that has been struggling to find their focus, dealing with stars being out, and just coming off a hard-fought win on Wednesday. The Storm beat the Sky 74-71, covering like I thought they would, but they forced me to endure them almost blowing a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter. I think Seattle is a team of tiers - older stars figuring out how to mix with the new players. That doesn’t mean they’re not a very good team, but it means they’ll have growing pains that might manifest as closer games than expected. Los Angeles, on the other hand, is better than they were last year. As much as her histrionics distract, adding Liz Cambage was a good move for the Sparks, and the return of scorer Nneka Ogwumike from injury has vaulted them to respectability. The spread’s too high, so I’ll take the points.
