Connecticut Sun at New York Liberty, 6 pm Eastern
The Pick: Connecticut -6.5 (-106), bet $10.60 to win $10
New York has a new coach, Sandy Brondello, who comes over from Phoenix, and that should help the Liberty exceed last year’s disappointing performance. But Connecticut knows they blew a chance to be champions last year. The Sun were the WNBA’s best team all season before stumbling to a Chicago Sky team that, while peaking at the right time, were not as talented or as good. Connecticut will be on a mission this season to avenge that disappointing loss. The Sun have too much talent, with Jonquel Jones a prime candidate for MVP. They’ll start this season off with a message to the rest of the league.
Atlanta Dream at Dallas Wings, 8 pm Eastern
The Pick: Atlanta +6.5 (-104), bet $10.40 to win $10
Atlanta had a terrible season last year, both on and off the court. But they let Courtney Williams, suspended after a fight outside a nightclub, go to Connecticut, and picked Rhyne Howard with the #1 selection in the 2022 draft. They might not be much better than last year, but it is a fresh start. Dallas, on the other hand, comes off a frustrating season of their own, and has a current suspension - Satou Sabally, for personal reasons - to start this year. The Wings proved last year they can score, but didn’t defend well enough to make a big dent in the playoffs, and without Sabally their frontcourt will have trouble handling Howard. I think this is an uneven game that stays close.
