US Open men's 2nd round Part 1: Abrams picks de Minaur vs Garin, Lopez vs Nishioka, Federer vs Dzumhur, Lajovic vs Kudla, Pouille vs Evans

Matches start Wednesday at 11 am EDT.

2019 U.S. Open

Flushing Meadows, Queens, NY

Men’s Second Round picks

Wednesday, August 28, 2019

Alex de Minaur over Cris Garin

Aussie Alex de Minaur (the Demon) has too much of an all-court game to give Cristian Garin a chance on the hard courts here. Garin just got by Chris Eubanks in five, but the Demon had little trouble with Pierre-Hugues Herbert. If de Minaur plays like he did in Atlanta, this match will take no time.

Feliciano Lopez over Yoshi Nishioka

Feliciano Lopez had no trouble taking out second-ranked American Taylor Fritz, which wasn’t a total surprise. His lefty serve and mature game gives everyone trouble. He’s more skilled than Nishioka, but Nishioka is as game as they come. The longer this match goes, the more Nishioka has a chance to win.

Roger Federer over D. Dzumhur

The Fed is 2-0 against Damir Dzumhur, but they haven’t played since 2015’s Wimbledon. Does it matter?

Dusan Lajovic over Denis Kudla

Denis Kudla kissed Janko Tipsarevic’s career goodbye with a four set win in Round One, but that’s about as far as he’ll go. Dusan Lajovic is far better than last year when he beat the American in straight sets in Guadeloupe, and I think Lajovic will roll.

Lucas Pouille over Dan Evans

It’s hard to believe that these guys haven’t played before, but Pouille is playing better tennis than Dan Evans right now. Pouille took out Germany’s aging Philipp Kohlschreiber while Evans handled Adrian Mannarino, yet I’d expect Pouille to dominate Evans, as there’s nothing the Brit can do to hurt the stylish Frenchman.
