Bianca Andreescu over Serena Williams
Bianca Andreescu is back, and she is dangerous. She played hard and smart and knocked off tough American Sofia Kenin in two straight very competitive sets 6-4, 7-6. The Canadian mixed backhand slices, strategically placed drop shots, hard, deep groundies and a tough serve to out-rally Kenin, who had a great tournament herself. Serena Williams overcame her recent propensity for scattering her groundstrokes long and wide by serving well and competing with the ferociousness of a tiger in defeating Czech qualifier Marie Bouzkova 1-6, 6-3, 6-3. Williams has shown the ability to use her serve to continually get her out of trouble and held serve in the second and third sets with relative ease. Still, the American can no longer move the way she used to, as her mobility has been severely compromised since she left the game a couple of years ago for maternity leave. Andreescu and Williams have never played, and it might take the 19-year-old a few games to get used to the pace and placement of the Williams delivery, but once she does, I think that Andreescu will use her superior mobility and her ability to change tempo, spins, and speeds on her groundies to out-rally Williams. Williams is impressive in her ability to hang on at almost 38-years-old, but she no longer is the champion she once was. The Queen is dead. Long live the Queen.
