Bayer Leverkusen looks to shake off shock loss to stay in Bundesliga top four race

If this last two weeks of play after the break has shown us anything, it is that the Bundesliga, below Bayern Munich, is unpredictable.

Bayer Leverkusen was cruising out of the break, then ran into a buzzsaw Tuesday against VfL Wolfsburg. Wolfsburg dominated from start to finish, taking a 4-0 lead before a late Julian Baumgartlinger goal pulled one back for Leverkusen.

The 4-1 loss hurt in many ways: the teams around Leverkusen, Borussia Monchengladbach and RB Leipzig, both drew, so the opportunity to stay in fourth was dropped. But the three-goal loss also stung, as now Leverkusen is behind Monchengladbach in the Bundesliga table on goal difference (19-17), in a top four race that looks to be coming down to the wire.

There can be no more slip-ups for Leverkusen, and I would expect the side to come out Friday and score early in the contest.
