Mims' Monday Night Football Pick: New-look New York Jets vs Buffalo Bills, spread, wide receiver prop, more

The Aaron Rodgers Era begins for the Jets.

The Buffalo Bills and the New York Jets square off on Monday Night Football. The Bills are favored by 2.5 and the total is 45.5. The money line is Bills – 135 and Jets +114. New York is the home team.

The recent history: The Bills and the Jets are AFC East Divisional opponents. The Bills have won the division the past 3 seasons. In head-to-head match ups over that span, the Bills are 5-1.

Coaching Match Up: Bills Head Coach Sean McDermott over Jets Head Coach Robert Saleh. McDermott  made it to the AFC Championship Game in 2021. Saleh has more talent on this team than any of his previous seasons.

Quarterback: Bills QB Josh Allen over Aaron Rodgers. Two years ago, Rodgers would have the nod over Allen. Rodgers was league MVP in 2021. Allen can affect the game with his arm and legs. He is the best running option on the Bills. Rodgers does have more to work with than he did in Green Bay last season.

Player Prop Bet: The head-to-head matchup between WR Stefon Diggs and Allen Lazard. Diggs is -36.5 yards over Lazard. The price is -115. Lazard is familiar with Rodgers as the two played together for 5 seasons in Green Bay. Drops are an issue with Lazard with a total of 15 against 169 receptions. Diggs is a top 5 receiver and has averaged 77 yards against the Jets in 7 career games. Lazard averages 40 receiving yards per game for his career. Take Diggs to beat Lazard!

The consensus: Bills have 61% of the action and the total is 64 % going with the over

The Selection: The Jets should be much improved over last season. The addition of Rodgers, Lazard and running back Dalvin Cook are upgrades at each position in comparison to last season. The Jets were a top 5 defensive unit in 2023 and held Allen to his lowest  passing yardage in a single game during week 14 of 2023. Rodgers is 12-8 on MNF while Allen is 3-3. Rodgers is 10-5 in week one games while Allen is 3-2. The Bills defense will be without injured edge rusher Von Miller so Rodgers will have time to throw. Take the Jets and the under.

On Thursday Night Football, I will preview the Philadelphia Eagles and the Minnesota Vikings.
