VINTAGE DIGITS

>>> NFL DRAFT

It all started with LSU’s Joe Burrow going first to Cincinnati, but when the New Orleans Saints selected Georgia offensive tackle Isaiah Wilson with pick No. 29 late in Thursday’s first round, it gave the Southeastern Conference its 13th player taken, a new all-time first-round record for a conference.

Auburn cornerback Noah Igbinoghene went to Miami at 30 and the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs ended the night by taking LSU running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, meaning the SEC (with 15 selections) was one short of having exactly half of the first round all to itself.

By the way, those 15 players were chosen with these picks:

1, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 12, 14, 15, 20, 22, 28, 29, 30, 32.

Here are the college conference’s with the most first-round picks in a single draft:

15 . . . 2020 Southeastern Conference

12 . . . 2006 Atlantic Coast Conference

12 . . . 2013 Southeastern Conference

12 . . . 2017 Southeastern Conference

>>> PHILLIES

On Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018, the Phillies hosted a doubleheader with the Washington Nationals.

The Phils used 23 players in first game and 24 players in the second game.

>>> NFL DRAFT

As the rest of the draft unfolds, keep your eye out for three former St. Joseph’s Prep players who might be selected – Georgia RB D’Andre Swift, Michigan G Jon Runyan Jr. and Penn State CB John Reid. If all three of them get picked, it would mark a first for a Philadelphia high school.

As far we can tell (from tedsilary.com and pro-football-reference.com) these are the only Philly high schools to even have two players selected in the same draft:

> 2018 Imhotep

WR D.J. Moore (1/24), Carolina Panthers

RB David Williams (7/226), Denver Broncos

> 1974 Cardinal Dougherty

WR Harvey McGee (11/280), Dallas Cowboys

LB Mike Dennery (13/330), Oakland Raiders

>>> SIXERS

The Sixers-Celtics Eastern Conference Semifinal series in 2012 is the only playoff series in NBA history in which each of the first two games was decided by one point.

● ● ●

>>> EAGLES

Keith Byars.

There, we did it. We mentioned the former Eagles running back out of Ohio State in every edition of Vintage Digits this week, a feat that may never be accomplished in the history of sports annals again.
