Bet the NFL: Eckel examines today's future special bet at Parx on the Eagles making the playoffs

Do you think the Eagles will make the NFC playoffs if, and when, there is a 2020 NFL season?

All right Eagles fans this is for you.

Do you think your team will make the NFC playoffs if, and when, there is a 2020 NFL season? Parx Casino’s on-line sports betting site is offering you pretty good odds on a one-day special bet.

Parx has a “special’’ Eagles bet available and it’s pretty straightforward and simple. Will the Eagles make the playoffs? Yes -125. You can’t even bet the No.

So, if you think the Eagles will repeat as NFC East champs or qualify as now one of three wild-card teams $125 can earn you $100. Or if you’re a smaller bettor, $12.50 can earn you $10.

Now is it a good bet?

There are 16 teams in the NFC and under the new rules seven will make the playoffs. So, what you’re betting is one of two options. The Eagles are the best team in the NFC East and will win the division; or they are at least one of the three best teams that don’t win a division title.

Let’s look at the division first:

The Giants are not winning the division. They are just not. First-year head coach, second-year turnover-prone quarterback, and awful defense do not add up to a division title.

Washington will be much better hiring Ron Rivera to replace Jay Gruden is what horse racing people would call an “aggressive coaching change’’. Rivera will take a defense that has some talented players, add Chase Young and make it good. But again, a division title does not appear likely for the Redskins. Wild-card, would be interesting.

So, in reality the East is the Eagles vs. Dallas. The Cowboys also improved from a coaching standpoint with Mike McCarthy taking over for Jason Garrett. Dallas has talent and a rested and rejuvenated McCarthy will get the most of it.

As far as the wild-card goes, the NFC North has Green Bay and Minnesota as playoff caliber teams. Sorry, Nick Foles Nation, I’m not buying into the Bears.

The South has New Orleans and the Tom Brady Bucs. Atlanta is a maybe, but I’d say no.

And the West is where the problem comes in because the 49ers and Seahawks are very good. The Rams, who knows? And the Cards are going to be better.

So, do the Eagles make the playoffs? I’d bet yes. But I wish I had better odds.
