A 17 game season? What the NFL is planning for the 2020/21 season

The NFL is floating the idea of a 17-game season to the NFL Player Association. This will come at the expense of one preseason game. The NFL would flip the schedule because the season would give an extra home game to teams during the 2020 campaign. The 2021 season would accommodate the teams that played 8 home games the previous season.

This would create an extra bye week and the season would last approximately 19 weeks. The playoffs would expand to 14 teams with only 1 team from each conference getting a bye. There will be 3 games in each conference on Wild Card Weekend.

I like the idea of having an additional game. The additional bye week will allow the players more time to rest during the season. I would add an expansion to the rosters and increase to 60. This would create more playing opportunities.

The extra game can be played in international markets such as London and Mexico City. American cities that don’t have team could have the opportunity to host the additional game in a neutral site that is within the same time zone as one of the teams and does not require flying cross country for the visitor. The sports marketing possibilities are endless.

It would also give the sports betting community another week to bet on. How cool is that!
