Politicians need to dial it down or shut up

So they're discussing a sports betting bill in the Tennessee House as they are in most state houses across the country. Nothing new there,'

Then, according to The Legal Sports Report, the back-and-forth got a little . . . I would say, heated, but the better word seems to be … stupid.

Rep. Andy Holt, who just happens to be white, said this to Rep. Rick Staples, who just happens to be black.

"Well I personally believe — and I think there are others on this committee who believe — that this legislation has been rushed through. I believe that the potential ramifications of this legislation are life altering. I believe that this leads down a path toward, in essence, slavery — slavery to an addiction. The state is playing into that addiction, unfortunately.

"In essence, slavery."

Seriously, dude? You're equating people betting their own money of their own free will to people being other people's property against their own free will?

Yes, people can become addicted to gambling (whether or not it's legal), the say way they can become addicted to booze, Oxy, caffeine, chocolate or even the Hallmark Channel.

And whether that addiction is due to some type of chemical imbalance or not, it is not an addiction forced on them by plantation owners with guns and whips.

So, moving forward, I'm going to add a new rule to my list as a former celebrity gossip writer:

No bad individual gets compared to Hitler.
No bad event gets compared to the Holocaust.
Not every asshole is a Nazi.
Not every Democrat is Saul Alinsky.
Not every athlete or entertainer who does something good is a legend.
Sports betting is not comparable to slavery.

Happy Easter and Passover.

Because you can bet on anything
