Two MIT alums place a big bet on their start-up

In every newsletter, we half-jokingly look for an out-of-the-box bet to go under the headline "Because you can bet on anything..."

But if a new start-up has its way, you will actually be able to bet on anything.

Forbes reports on Kalshi, the brainchild of recent MIT alums Tarek Mansour and Luana Lara, who hope to set up a worldwide network in which users can post questions which seek a predicted outcome and other users can bet on the outcome. With actual money. The questioner gets a piece of the loser cash.

While it's likely to fly in less-regulated foreign countries, the company believes it will be able to win approval of U.S. regulators. if that's the case, a user may one day be able to bet on how many 100-degree days Philadelphia will have in August or whether the next Quentin Tarantino movie will gross $100 million. And not only will you be able to wager on whether a member of the British royal family will give birth to a boy or girl, you'll be able to pose the question for your extended family as to whether your Cousin Ilene will. The possibilities are literally endless.

Wednesday Results

The big winner yesterday was again Sean Miller, who went 11-0-1 with his soccer predictions. That's a good day by any bettor's standards. Neal Abrams went 4-2 picking women's tennis at the Volvo Car Open and RT picked a trifecta at Penn National. Team sport plays all did okay. With a limited slate, Craig Dietel won his only NHL pick.

We'll try to do even better today...

Good luck at the tables, windows, kiosks and apps.
