Virginia Tech has had a nice ride in this tournament. First, they get an overtime buzzer-beating three-pointer to beat Clemson on Wednesday. Then, they did whatever they wanted offensively against Notre Dame in a seven-point win that wasn’t that close and where they were never really threatened. Well, that ride ends tonight. North Carolina cracked the Top 25 this week and has been rising up the Pomeroy rankings over the past month. The Tar Heels are finally showing the athleticism and offensive firepower that had me singing their praises all season. Last night, they blew out a great defensive team in Virginia even though they only shot 38.5% from the field and 26.1% from three. They’re not going to shoot that poorly tonight, and if they do, they average almost eight more rebounds per game than the Hokies (39.8 vs. 32.0). UNC beat Virginia Tech in January, and guards Caleb Love and R.J. Davis have since hit their stride, and they’ll shut down streaky and confident Hokie Storm Murphy. Rides end.
