Minnesota Timberwolves at Orlando Magic, 7 pm Eastern
The Pick: Minnesota -325, bet $48.75 to win $15; Minnesota -7.5, bet $16.50 to win $15
Currently, Minnesota holds the six-seed in the Western Conference, two games out of the five-seed. It feels strange to say this, but Minnesota would rather play Golden State (#3 seed) in the first round of the playoffs than Memphis (#2), and right now they’re two games out of that matchup. So every game counts. They’re on the road against an Orlando team that’s building an interesting core - emphasis on “building.” They’re not there yet, but a top draft pick will help them, which means every game counts in a different fashion. So I’ll put a hefty amount on the Timberwolves moneyline and rely on their 8-5 record against the spread as a road favorite to take me home on this one.
Los Angeles Clippers at Atlanta Hawks, 7:30 pm Eastern
The Pick: Los Angeles +6.5 (-110), bet $16.50 to win $15
Atlanta is 16-11 against the spread as a home favorite, but their average margin of victory is a mere 5.1 points, which is actually -0.6 against that spread. So it’s not as clear-cut that the Hawks are such a home-court lock. Los Angeles beat Atlanta on Jan. 9, 106-93, and even though that game was in L.A., they’ve won eight of eleven against the Hawks. They’re also looking a bit sharper recently: 6-2 in their last eight, 8-3 ATS in their last 11. The Clippers are hanging on and can see the return of Paul George (and eventually, Kawhi Leonard???) coming on the horizon. I think they’re battling in the hopes they can surprise come spring.
Toronto Raptors at Phoenix Suns, 9 pm Eastern
The Pick: Phoenix -210, bet $42 to win $20; Phoenix -5 (-110), bet $16.50 to win $15
Phoenix will be without Chris Paul but Devin Booker is back, and the Suns are still 28-7 at home and 49-9 as a favorite. Also, Toronto is three games deep into a six-game road trip, and since we’re in the dregs of the season, it’ll be tough for them to keep focus and come out sharp so far away from home and with the regular-season finish line in sight. The Suns (and Booker) are fired up, not only for their postseason chances but to keep things aloft while their leader Paul is out. The point guard may be the alpha on the team, but Booker isn’t far behind and this is a unique opportunity for him to step up in a different way. I’ll take Phoenix at home.
