Boston Celtics at Charlotte Hornets, 7 pm Eastern
The Pick: Charlotte +7.5 (-110), bet $16.48 to win $15
Boston had a huge win on Sunday against the Brooklyn Nets, with Jayson Tatum going off for 54 points. He’s cementing his place as an NBA superstar. They’re bound to let down a bit from that nationally-televised contest, and they play a Charlotte team that’s 10-7-1 against the spread as a home underdog, and who’re battling for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Currently, the Hornets are in the ninth seed, virtually tied with Atlanta. They have no room for error. I’m not arguing they’ll win tonight, but they’re definitely going to scratch and claw as best they can. Getting 7.5 points at home is a lot; I’ll take it.
Toronto Raptors at San Antonio Spurs, 8:30 pm Eastern
The Pick: Toronto -1 (-110), bet $16.50 to win $15
As we ramble towards the season’s end, the matchups between teams who have playoff aspirations and teams that don’t become more and more appealing. Like Charlotte, Toronto is battling for a playoff position. The Raptors hold the seventh seed currently but are just 1.5 games behind Cleveland for the sixth. More importantly, they’re only two games out of the eighth seed. Toronto doesn’t want to slip. They’re 6-3 against the spread as a road favorite, and tonight’s game against the Spurs is essentially a pick ‘em. They beat San Antonio by 25 on Jan. 4; I see it being tighter tonight but still a Raptor victory.
Denver Nuggets at Sacramento Kings, 10 pm Eastern
The Pick: Denver -4 (-110), bet $16.50 to win $15
Playoff seeding again. Denver is slotted sixth in the West right now, but only one game out of the fifth seed, and although the NBA Playoffs are gonna be a bloodbath regardless of seeding, I do think the Nuggets would want to avoid Golden State in the first round. They’re just 1.5 games out of a home-court advantage in the opening round. So they’ve got something to play for tonight. Sacramento, um, does not. Denver has beaten the Kings three straight and are 9-4 against the spread in their last 13 games overall. They’ve won nine of ten, while Sacramento has lost seven of nine. The Kings see the end of the road; the Nuggets imagine it going for a while. Tonight’s game will reflect that.
