Toronto Raptors at Cleveland Cavaliers, 7:30 pm Eastern

The Pick: Cleveland -195, bet $28.85 to win $15; Cleveland -5 (-110), bet $13.75 to win $12.50

Cleveland won the last matchup between these two teams on Dec. 26 by 45 points, 144-99. I don’t think the margin will be quite that wide today, but I still like the Cavaliers at home, where they’re 19-11 overall, 17-12-1 against the spread, and 10-8-1 ATS as a favorite. Toronto is pretty banged up, with Fred VanVleet, David Johnson, and OG Anunoby all listed as out for today’s game. Cleveland leads the NBA in scoring defense, with Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley anchoring a squad that only allows 103.3 points per game. Finally, these two teams are battling for playoff position; Cleveland holds the sixth seed in the East but the Raptors are only two games behind them. That makes for a game where both teams will be going hard, and I like the Cavs to rise up to the challenge.

New Orleans Pelicans at Denver Nuggets, 8 pm Eastern

The Pick: Denver -162, bet $40.50 to win $25; Denver -3.5 (-110), bet $16.50 to win $15

I like Denver at home as well, although they’re only 12-17 against the spread in the Mile High City. I like them because, despite that, the spread is artificially low due to center Nikola Jokic being listed as “day-to-day.” Jokic was a late pull from Friday’s game due to illness, but research says he is more probable to play than not, and the -3.5 doesn’t reflect that. The Nuggets have been doing their typical excellent work under the radar, going 8-2 in their last ten games. They’re going to be contenders come playoff time, especially if Jamal Murray returns. New Orleans has been playing better, winners of four straight, but they’re still not quite ready for prime time. It’s rumored that Zion Williamson will be back next week, but I’m not so sure that will smooth things out. Rather, it may make things more chaotic. I’ll take Denver to win a game they should win tonight.
