VINTAGE DIGITS

>>> LITTLE LEAGUE WORLD SERIES

No Little League World Series this year, so we take you back, back, back, back . . .

In 1971, future major leaguer Lloyd McClendon, playing for the team out of Gary, Indiana, was 5-for-5 with five home runs and 10 intentional walks in the LLWS.

Gary lost in the championship game to Taiwan, 12-3. McClendon hit a three-run home run on the first pitch he faced in the title game and then took four intentional walks. Taiwan broke a 3-3 tie with nine runs in the top of the ninth.

By the way, it took 97 games for McClendon to reach five career home runs in the major leagues.

>>> TEMPLE FOOTBALL

Former Temple coach Matt Rhule is now the head guy for the Carolina Panthers and he has been scooping up Owl alumni left and right. He has signed six as free agents in the last seven weeks. They are:

> WR Robby Anderson

> LB Sam Franklin

> Wr Keith Kirkwood

> TE Colin Thompson

> QB P.J. Walker

> LB Tahir Whitehead

All of which led loyal reader Glenn Petrucci to wonder which NFL team has employed the most former Temple players in one season.

We went through pro-football-reference.com for every Owl to play at least one regular season game for a team in the Super Bowl era and we found two different club that used a “parliament” of three Owls in one season:

> 1993 Kansas City Chiefs

RB Todd McNair

FS Kevin Ross

LB Santo Stephens

> 2013 New York Jets

WR Michael Campbell

S Jaiquawn Jarrett

DE Muhammad Wilkerson

>>> NHL

Joe Sakic had an NHL-record eight career playoff overtime goals.

Maurice Richard (six) is second.

Patrick Kane and Glenn Anderson have five.
