In Race 1, Just Steel sat off the speed duel between the 1/5 debuting Pirate and Arteta and came with a strong run turning for home but was rebuffed by the strong debut runner and had to settle for second at 9/1. In Race 2, Talkin Pharoah sat off a fast pace and took the lead turning for home en route to an easy win. In the Grade 1 Diana it was a photo finish between In Italian and Whitebeam who controlled the pace. Fluffy Socks didn’t have enough pace to chase but she also looked a little outclassed vs. these. Speaking of class edges, the Grade 3 Kelso went to our selection Casa Creed, who stalked the pace and took charge turning for home without any real anxious moments. In Race 10, Gold Sweep broke last and made up good ground while wide to be second but couldn’t catch the 46/1 winner. In Race 11, Cigarette Boat shot to the front and battled on gamely down to the wire where he was swarmed by three rivals ending up fourth beaten 1/2 length.
Two more winners with two second place finishes from six selections today gives us a record of 9 horses finishing first or second from our first 12 picks given out at this Saratoga meet. Talk about red hot.
Let’s close out opening week from Saratoga with a Sunday race card. There’s a 90% chance of rain in the forecast but as of now it’s looking like that’ll be in the mid to late afternoon. I’ve handicapped accordingly. Let’s get started.
Saratoga:
Race 10: Marley’s Ghost - 1 pt win (US Morning Line Odds: 8/1)
Maiden claimers bred in New York close us out sprinting 6 1/2 furlongs. This is a pretty weak group and I’m looking for a new face. Marley’s Ghost hasn’t been seen since January 22 when she spit the bit going first time Lasix & blinkers at Laurel. Today she drops to maiden claimers for the first time (a 28% winning move for this trainer who’s 1 for 1 at the meet thus far). She’s been working well and has three conditioning five-furlong drills leading up to this. She cost a little less than 10 times the stud fee for her sire so I’m hoping there’s more here than we’ve seen on the racetrack so far.
