Our day began with Romeinaday not breaking particularly well from her inside post and she was taken back early and came with a mild rally for sixth. Will be better next time with this start under her belt. In Race 3 Fearless raced at the back and gained late ground as the heavy favorite, Elite Power powered away with the victory. In Race 6, Portos raced in mid pack and never really fired. In Race 8, General Jim was under a ride for much of the race to keep up and could do no better than sixth (it’s going to be one of those days). In Race 9 we scratched. In Race 10, Cody’s Wish’s terrific story continued as he stalked the early pace came 8 wide and won as easy as you please drawing away to his sixth in a row. In Race 11, Up to the Mark was up to the test in the Grade 1 Manhattan giving us back to back winners heading into the Belmont Stakes. In Race 12, the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes, a deft move by Javier Castellano won the race for Arcangelo whose trainer, Jena Antonucci, made history as the first female trainer to win a Triple Crown race. Tapit Shoes battled for the early lead and backed up. In Race 13, Curly Larry and Mo battled early and retreated.
I took a few shots with bombs today but connected with two favorites. Onward!!
Let’s close out the week with another race card from Belmont Park where we’re expecting more beautiful weather with fast and firm track conditions. We’ve got four stakes races on the card. I’ve handicapped those plus I’m trying to get an also eligible in a maiden race, but he’ll probably scratch.
Let’s get to work!
Belmont Park:
Race 10: Spansive - 2 pts win - BEST BET (US Morning Line Odds: 7/2)
The Grade 2 Wonder Again at a mile and an eighth on the inner turf is our final stakes race of the afternoon. I’m siding with the undefeated Spansive, who races for the connections of Todd Pletcher and John Velazquez. There’s not a ton of early pace signed on here and Spansive has proven twice that she can take a licking and keep on ticking. In her debut she handed Gloria’s Princess (who’s a half to Grade 1 winner Harvey’s Lil Goil) when that one took a mean run at her. In her second start she turned back several challenges including one from another of today’s rivals, Jupiter’s Moon. A few years ago, Todd Pletcher wasn’t really known much for his turf runners but more and more he’s built up a solid reputation as a turf trainer winning yesterday’s Grade 1 Manhattan with Up to the Mark. Gate to wire.
Best of luck to all our members playing Sunday’s races from Belmont!
