I only had Tuesday off this week but wanted to make sure I got an early crack at Wednesday’s races from Delaware. Heading into the final day of the month we’re down $36 for the month (based on $25 win bets) and had a 5/1 and a 24/1 shot get beaten two noses on Sunday. Just need one win to turn a profit for the month of May. As a reminder, I’ve done my damage in these Delaware Park races in routes on both turf and dirt over the last few years so that’ll be the focus today. Fast and firm conditions are expected. Let’s get to work!

Delaware:

Race 7: Ocean City - 1 pt win (US Morning Line Odds: 5/1)

Allowance runners race a mile and a sixteenth on turf. At first glance this is an evenly matched field in terms of speed figures but recent Keeneland maiden winner I like Ocean City for a few reasons: Trainer Brittany Russell is winning at a 25% rate at the meet so far and is winning 27% on the year. Top rider (and her husband) Sheldon Russell is in the irons off a trainer switch from Steve Asmussen – a move that yields 32% wins for Russell. Now to Ocean City. After a debut sprinting where he ran into future Grade 3 Peter Pan runner up Bishops Bay and future Grade 3 Lexington winner First Mission, they tried this half brother to Jackie’s Warrior on turf where he stumbled and lost all chance at the start. He returned at Keeneland in April and proceeded to run the field of 11 off their feet taking them gate to wire. Here’s what I like most about that race: Seven of those runners have returned and all seven improved their speed figure by an average of 21.4 points. Beyond that, Ocean City appears to have a pace advantage against this group. You’d think that a half brother to Jackie’s Warrior would be able to out-hoof the rest of these to the lead anyway but after seeing that last start, I’m confident he can take these from start to finish once again.

Best of luck to all our members playing Wednesday’s races from Delaware Park!
