Garrity's Sunday Stakes picks the Jacques Cartier at Woodbine, Serena's Song at Monmouth, Vagrancy at Belmont

Garrity's first post is 4:16 pm EDT.

We have three plays on this beautiful Spring Sunday, three stakes in Ontario, New Jersey, and New York that go off in rapid succession, just 25 minutes from the first to the last. We expect fast going for all of them, so let’s go.

Woodbine, Race 7, 4:16 pm ET
Grade 3 Jacques Cartier Stakes, 6 furlongs, Synthetic, 4 & Up

Eight go in the Jacques Cartier, a Grade 3 at 6 furlongs on the Woodbine lint. We like 7-Candy Overload, who is a deep closer: While horses with this running style are almost always at the mercy of what happens in front of them, as they need a swift early pace to set up their late rally, we think that there is enough speed in this group that the pace will favor a come-from-behinder, and Candy Overload, a 5-year-old gelding, has by far the best late kick in this group. Look for him to be well behind early, and flying late; we will bet him to win at 4-1. The bet: Woodbine, Race 7, $40 to win on 7-Candy Overload.

Monmouth Park, Race 9, 4:35 pm ET

$100,000 Serena’s Song Stakes, 1 mile 70 yards, Fillies & Mares 3 & Up

Seven fillies and mares go to the post for the Serena’s Song. We fancy 3-Leader of the Band, who was last seen in the 1⅛ mile Falls City Handicap at Churchill Downs. We like the fact that she is cutting back in distance, but what we like even more is that she has speed, something in short supply in the rest of the field. We see Leader of the Band going right to the front out of the gate, and staying in front, being the leader of the band, as it were, all the way around the track. We will bet her to win at 2-1. The bet: Monmouth Park, Race 9, $40 to win on 3-Leader of the Band.

Belmont Park, Race 8, 4:40 pm ET

Grade 3 Vagrancy Stakes, 6 ½ furlongs, Dirt, Fillies & Mares 4 & Up

A good field of eight lines up for the Vagrancy. The pick is 3-Caramel Swirl, a 5-year-old mare who looks to rebound after a poor effort in a minor stakes race at Tampa Bay Downs in February. While her spotty race record is something of a concern – she’s only run three times in the past year and a half, presumably because of physical problems – she is very good when she is sound, and we trust that trainer Bill Mott will have her ready today. We will bet her to win at 2-1. The bet: Belmont Park, Race 8, $40 to win on 3-Caramel Swirl.

That’s all for today. Until the next time, enjoy the races, be safe, and, as always, good luck at the windows.
